Achillea tomentosa, or Yarrow, is a hardy perennial that is a favorite of many gardeners. This variety, Golden Fleece, is low-growing and loaded with golden flowers above silvery foliage. It grows easily from seed and has a long bloom season, late spring through summer.
Yarrow is a 6 - 8 inch tall perennial flowering plant growing in USDA zones 4 - 9. Yarrow makes a great cut flower, and it dries well for use in dried arrangements.
It is so low growing many home owners use it for a ground cover plant.
Sowing Rate: Approximately 500 seeds covers 10 square feet. Start Yarrow seed indoors 6 – 8 weeks before the last expected frost date. Press the seed into soil, do not cover it and keep the seed moist. With a temperature of 68F, germination is usually in 21 days. Grow Yarrow in full sun. It prefers well-drained soil, and it is usually deer resistant.
Space plants 12 inches apart. In areas with long growing season, Yarrow can be directly started outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Deadheading promotes continual bloom, and the clumps should be divided every 3 – 4 years to keep the plant healthy.
